At Las Colinas

A world apart... to fly (International School of Falconry)

A world apart... to fly

The International School of Falconry Las Colinas offers a unique proposition in Spain: showcasing and sharing the pleasure of the ancient art of falconry with you, a Living Human Heritage.

We invite you to enjoy an unusual and memorable experience where you can interact with one of our birds of prey in beautiful Mediterranean woodland. You don’t have to be an expert, anybody who wishes to can experience flying a Harris hawk for the first time, a species known for its sociable nature, or any of the other raptors at the school.

The falconer at the school will accompany you, giving you the guidelines you need and providing everything you need throughout the experience. You can fly a trained bird on your own or with friends and family.

You can enjoy very special moments at our school, such as the thrill of carrying a hawk perched on your gauntlet and watching it fly straight back to your fist.

The International School of Falconry offers programmes for adults and children.  Children under 16 are not permitted to fly birds but they can interact with the smaller birds at the school.

You can choose an experience with 1 or 2 birds at the school. We also offer programmes for groups.

Don’t forget to wear suitable outdoor footwear to walk through the countryside and bring a camera; all other necessary equipment for the activity -gauntlets, hawking bags, etc…- will be provided by our staff.

“During my stay in Las Colinas Golf & Country Club I took the opportunity to visit the International School of Falconry. I'm glad I could take the opportunity to do so because it was an awesome feeling that I had never lived. The school director, Ruben Carrasco, explained the ancient art of falconry and could see up close all the birds of the School. The ride was about 60 minutes with an eagle Harris we called with a whistle and came several times responding to our call. Amazing experience. I would love to repeat it.”

"It was an awesome experience, being educated about these birds of prey when we walked with them in the nature of Las Colinas Golf & Country Club. The helpful and patient guide was very knowledgeable and gave us interesting information about the birds and their behavior while we stroke the bird sitting on my wrist, looking me straight in the eyes. If you are with two I would recommend to share a bird. One can take pictures and videos while the other is releasing the bird into the air or feeding it. I highly recommend to anyone to learn the basics of one of the oldest sports in the world. This is definitely something you should do while you are at Las Colinas Golf & Country Club or visit this region."

The family spent Easter at Las Colinas Golf & Country Club, accompanied by some friends. We wanted to rest, play golf and enjoy the Beach Club. We’re fans of Las Colinas, so much so that we’ve been going there every long weekend we can for the last two years. It’s the ideal place to get away from the hectic, stressful pace of life in Madrid. Once we arrived, we found out about the falconry experiences offered at the International School of Falconry. It was simply amazing! I’ve never had any close contact with birds of prey before and the nearest I’ve got was going to see a demonstration with our son when he was little. But the experience Las Colinas offers it totally different. You fly the bird yourself in secluded natural surroundings. It’s like being transported to another world. You can fly the Harris Hawk freely in the sky and seeing how it soars and then dives to land on your arm is a truly unique feeling. The staff at the school is very pleasant and professional. Don’t miss the experience if you go to Las Colinas. If you don’t experience it firsthand you can’t begin to imagine what it feels like. I had the chance to have a real owl on my arm, beating its wings most impressively.

My husband and I decided to get away for a weekend at the beginning of March. We love golf and the course at Las Colinas had been recommended to us. We stayed in a two-bedroom apartment, which was very comfortable, quiet and had spectacular views over the forest. When we checked in, they told us we could book a falconry experience consisting of a walk during which you fly a Harris Hawk. Apparently, it’s the only place in Spain where you can do this. It sounded different to us and we signed up for the experience. We never imagined how much we would like it or the degree to which it would surprise us. The place you go round with the hawk is truly beautiful; a real discovery. The instructors give you a special glove and show you how to carry the bird on your arm. It’s impressive watching it fly and respond when you call, then return to your arm. I also loved meeting all the other birds at the falconry school and, particularly, Margarita, a gorgeous owl. It was a really worthwhile experience. It was a great weekend. The golf course and all the amenities are first rate.
